My first engineering job was in an oil refinery making fuel from crude oil. Then I worked as a chocolate engineer in one of the worlds largest chocolate factory. I have been in my current job since September
Chemical Engineer in the Technology Department
I am a chemical engineer in a big pharmaceutical company
I am currently a chemical engineer in one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world. We make lots of different drugs, including a new breakthrough cancer treatment that teaches your body to attack the cancer itself rather than filling it with nasty chemicals that make you very sick and kill healthy cells.
I am involved in lots of different projects. One project I am working on involves cutting down the time it takes to make a drug. This means we can make more of it faster, making sure all of our patients have enough to help them get better.
Another project I am working on is outsourcing the calibration work on our equipment. Usually it takes my colleagues in our labs days at a time to maintain and calibrate all the equipment. By giving this work to a specially trained person to control, they have more time to spend making sure our drugs are 100% perfect.
A big part of every engineers job is to make sure work is safe. I am constantly working on projects that make things safer for everyone .
My Typical Day
Every day is different!
Most days start with a meeting with my team to make sure we are on track for that day. Making sure we have the resources to facilitate production and are on target with all of our improvement projects.
Then my day consists of analysing data from improvement trials, writing reports to inform countries of any improvements made and their effects on the drug, meeting with different people from the labs and sterile manufacturing areas to coordinate equipment calibrations or address equipment issues and meet with met my project team to discuss the next step in our improvement projects.
What I'd do with the money
Help our local schools with the Young Scientist Award 2015
The young scientist award is an excellent initiative that makes young people get involved with science outside of a classroom setting.
I would use use this prize to help local schools make the most of their projects, hopefully the extra support will give more students the opportunity to get involved.
