• Question: do you work alone or as part of a team ?

      Hi Annie
      The projects that engineers work on are usually fairly complex, so require lots of different people with different skills helping out so you have to work as part of a team.

      The main project I’m on at the moment has 6 people working on it. I handle the design and testing, others handle the manufacturing and fabrication and then someone else might figure out how it will fit with other projects to make them better. We have to work as a close team, because there’s no point me designing something that’s impossible to make! Working as a team is a really fun aspect of my job.

      I spend 40% of my day alone – I need that time to plan and think. The rest of the time I spend with others.

      Both. Nearly all the work I do belongs to a team, but for a lot of it, I do my part on my own. That’s the hard thinking, reading, writing, programming. But then, as a team, we spend a lot of time explaining our individual work to each other, talking things over and working things out. A lot of engineering is teamwork, but there’s plenty room for people who like a quieter way of working, too.

      Hi Annie,

      It depends what project you are working on. There is usually always a team element to it. Especially because the company I work for is absolutely huge and we link in with sites in different countries a lot. Somedays I get great alone time and get through a good number crunching session. Other days I am with a team the whole day working through something as a group.
