• Question: has there ever been a very dangerous time when something bad happened

      Yes airplanes have crashed but my job is to identify what might lead to danger and then have things done so that the danger is less. In engineering we call danger “risk”. You can do things that are high risk but put in place other measures so that you make the risk smaller.

      As the nature of my work can involve dealing with explosive or harmful chemicals, there is always a risk that something bad may happen. Like Sinead said, as an engineer you do everything in your power to prevent these things from happening.

      There have been bad accidents in history such as the Bophal tragedy where poor management of the process caused toxic gas the leak into neighbouring villages and harm people. There have since been laws put in place that make sure disasters like this will never happen again.
