The biggest issue is managing my time so that I focus and do what is important rather than focusing on urgent things that take up a lot of time because someone else thinks they’re urgent and they want a reply or decision quickly.

Decisions I have to make are -‘will we suspend someone’s approval because they haven’t folowed the rules – will we purchase new IT systems – what is our position when a new proposal is made by industry or the European Commission .

I think as engineers we’re happiest when we’re figuring out how things work and how they can be made better. Unfortunately during a normal day we can’t do that all the time though! The main problem I find is having to write reports and attending meetings…I’d much prefer to be in the lab working on my projects! The reports and meetings are important because they keep you on track and make sure everything is going to plan, but some days they take up way too much time.

As Sinead and Padraic said, time is always a problem. There’s never enough. Very regularly I come up against a hole in my knowledge. This can be frustrating but usually it’s not a bad thing, because I’ll get to learn something new. The only thing I really don’t like is when things go wrong beyond my control – something breaks, for example.

      Hey Jon Snow,

The challenges are as varied as the work. Sometimes a piece of equipment will give you trouble and you won’t know why, so you have to figure it out.

Other times it can be people that give you the hardest challenges. When working with a group with different understandings and backgrounds, sometimes there can be a communication break down and what should have taken a day is now taking weeks! People skills are just as important as technical ones
